OHIP vs ODB — Understanding the Difference

Many Ontarians use the terms OHIP and ODB interchangeably, but they are different programs. OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) covers physician visits, hospital stays, and most medical procedures — but not prescription drugs or most vaccines. The Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program is a separate provincial program that covers prescription drug costs for eligible residents including seniors, social assistance recipients, and people with high drug costs relative to their income.

Shingrix is NOT covered by OHIP. However, it IS on the ODB formulary for eligible seniors. If you are 65 or older and enrolled in ODB, you can receive Shingrix at a significantly reduced cost — typically just the standard ODB co-pay ($2.00–$6.11 per dose depending on your ODB category). For everyone else, private insurance or out-of-pocket payment applies.

Shingrix Coverage Summary — Ontario 2025

Coverage Type Eligibility Your Cost

Is Shingrix Worth Paying for Out of Pocket?

Yes — the overwhelming consensus among infectious disease specialists, NACI (National Advisory Committee on Immunization), and public health authorities is that Shingrix is worth the cost for adults 50 and older, even without insurance coverage.

Here is why: Shingrix is over 90% effective at preventing shingles in adults 50–69, and over 89% effective in adults 70+. More importantly, it is over 89% effective at preventing post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the severe, often debilitating nerve pain that can persist for months or years after a shingles episode. PHN is notoriously difficult to treat and can significantly impair quality of life.

Shingles itself carries a lifetime risk of approximately 1 in 3 Canadians. The risk rises sharply after age 50 and with any immunosuppression. A shingles episode typically requires antiviral medication ($100–$200+), multiple physician visits, and potentially weeks or months of pain management — costs that easily exceed the price of two doses of Shingrix.

Frequently Asked Questions — Shingrix Coverage in Ontario

Is Shingrix covered by OHIP in Ontario?
Shingrix is not covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), which covers physician and hospital services. However, Shingrix (recombinant zoster vaccine, RZV) is partially covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program for eligible seniors aged 65 and older who are ODB recipients. If you are on ODB, your co-pay is typically $2–$6.11 per dose depending on your ODB category.
Who qualifies for ODB coverage of Shingrix in Ontario?
ODB covers Shingrix for Ontario residents aged 65 and older who are enrolled in the Ontario Drug Benefit program — which includes seniors on low income (Guaranteed Income Supplement recipients), residents of long-term care homes, and those receiving home care or social assistance. If you are 65+ with private drug insurance only, your insurer may cover Shingrix — check your benefit booklet or call your plan.
What is the cash price of Shingrix in Ontario?
Without any drug coverage, Shingrix costs approximately $170–$200 per dose at most pharmacies in Ontario. Since Shingrix requires two doses (given 2–6 months apart), the total out-of-pocket cost without insurance is approximately $340–$400. Prices vary slightly between pharmacies. Call Peel Best Pharmacy at (905) 712-0003 for our current pricing.
Is Shingrix worth paying for out of pocket?
Most infectious disease specialists and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) consider Shingrix worth paying for out of pocket. Shingrix is over 90% effective at preventing shingles and over 89% effective at preventing post-herpetic neuralgia (the severe nerve pain that can persist for months or years after shingles). Shingles itself can be extremely painful and debilitating. The cost of two doses compares favourably to the medical visits, antiviral treatment, and lost productivity of a shingles episode.
How many doses of Shingrix do I need?
Shingrix requires two doses. The second dose is given 2 to 6 months after the first. Both doses are needed for full protection — the two-dose series provides over 90% efficacy, while a single dose provides much less protection. Book both doses at Peel Best Pharmacy to ensure you complete the series.
Can I get Shingrix at Peel Best Pharmacy without a prescription?
Yes. Shingrix can be administered by an authorized pharmacist in Ontario without a doctor's prescription. Walk in to Peel Best Pharmacy at 550 Matheson Blvd W, Unit 106, Mississauga, or call (905) 712-0003 to confirm stock and schedule your dose.
