Pre-Travel Health Planning for Dubai and the UAE

Dubai and the broader United Arab Emirates are among the most popular international travel destinations for Canadians. With world-class hotels, shopping, and attractions, the UAE is generally a low-risk destination by global standards — but 'low risk' doesn't mean 'no risk'. A pre-travel health consultation is still recommended to ensure your vaccinations are up to date and to address destination-specific health concerns.

No vaccinations are mandatorily required to enter Dubai or the UAE from Canada. However, travel medicine physicians and public health agencies recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Hepatitis B for most travellers. These vaccines protect against illnesses that can be contracted through contaminated food, water, or blood/body fluids — risks that exist even in modern, developed countries when travellers venture beyond luxury hotels.

Peel Travel Clinic, located at 550 Matheson Blvd W in Mississauga's Heartland Town Centre, offers comprehensive pre-travel consultations for UAE travel. Our travel medicine team reviews your itinerary, health history, and current immunization status, and provides personalized recommendations including vaccines, travel medications, and destination-specific health advice. We stock all recommended travel vaccines and can administer them at the same appointment.

Book your consultation at least 4–6 weeks before departure to allow time for vaccines to take effect. If you are travelling sooner, call us at (905) 890-2757 — expedited vaccine schedules are often available, and a last-minute consultation is always better than travelling unprotected.

Recommended Vaccines for Dubai / UAE Travel

Hepatitis A

Recommended

Food and water-borne illness. Two doses provide lifelong protection. First dose needed 2 weeks before travel.

Typhoid

Recommended

Bacterial infection via contaminated food/water. Oral or injectable options. Consider especially if dining at local restaurants.

Hepatitis B

Recommended

Blood/body fluid transmission. Standard 3-dose series or accelerated schedule available. Usually covered by Ontario's publicly funded vaccine program.

Routine vaccines (MMR, Tdap, varicella, influenza)

Ensure up to date

All travellers should verify routine immunizations are current before international travel.

Rabies

Consider for extended stays

Relevant if you will have animal contact or spend extended time outside urban areas. Pre-exposure series is 3 doses.

Yellow Fever

Required if arriving from endemic country

Required only if arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Not required for travellers from Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dubai Travel Vaccines

Are any vaccines required to enter Dubai or the UAE?
There are no mandatory vaccination requirements to enter the United Arab Emirates (including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah) for Canadian travellers under normal circumstances. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. There are no other entry-requirement vaccines for UAE. However, "not required" is different from "not recommended" — several vaccines are strongly recommended based on health risk in the region.
What vaccines are recommended for travel to Dubai and the UAE?
The vaccines most commonly recommended for travel to Dubai and the UAE include: Hepatitis A (food and water-borne, risk exists despite UAE's modern infrastructure), Typhoid (especially if eating at local restaurants or street food outside tourist areas), Hepatitis B (recommended for all travellers who are not already immune, particularly if any medical care, tattooing, or sexual activity may occur), and routine vaccines (MMR, Tdap, varicella, influenza) should be up to date. Rabies may be considered for adventure travellers or extended stays. A travel medicine consultation at Peel Travel Clinic will identify which vaccines are appropriate for your specific itinerary and health history.
Is there a risk of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) in Dubai?
MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus) does circulate in the Middle East, primarily transmitted from dromedary camels to humans. For typical tourists visiting Dubai — staying in hotels, visiting malls and attractions, not having contact with camels or livestock — the risk of MERS is extremely low. There is no vaccine for MERS. Precautions include avoiding camel contact, camel products (raw milk, undercooked meat), and maintaining hand hygiene. If you plan to visit desert safari camps involving close camel interaction, discuss this with your travel medicine provider.
What health precautions should I take for Dubai's extreme heat?
Dubai's summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C with high humidity. Heat-related illness (heat exhaustion, heat stroke) is a genuine risk, especially for tourists not acclimatized to desert heat. Key precautions: stay hydrated (carry water at all times), avoid prolonged outdoor activity between 11 AM and 4 PM in summer, wear light loose clothing and sunscreen, never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, and be aware of signs of heat stroke (confusion, no sweating, high body temperature). Most Dubai attractions are air-conditioned — plan outdoor activities for early morning or evening.
How far in advance should I book a pre-travel consultation for Dubai?
Book your pre-travel consultation at Peel Travel Clinic at least 4–6 weeks before your departure to Dubai. This allows enough time for vaccine series that require multiple doses (Hepatitis B requires 3 doses over 6 months unless you use the accelerated schedule), and for single-dose vaccines like Hepatitis A and Typhoid to develop full protection before you travel. If your departure is sooner, call us at (905) 890-2757 — some vaccines can be administered on an expedited schedule, and even a same-week consultation is better than no consultation.
