Who Should Get an Updated COVID Vaccine?

Updated COVID vaccines are reformulated to better match currently circulating variants. NACI recommends them for a broad range of adults — particularly those at higher risk of severe outcomes.

Adults 65 and Older

Older adults face the highest risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes. NACI recommends updated COVID boosters for all adults 65+, particularly as immunity from prior doses or infection wanes over time.

Adults with Chronic Conditions

Conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, COPD, kidney disease, and cancer increase the risk of hospitalisation and severe outcomes from COVID-19. Booster vaccination is strongly recommended.

Pregnant Individuals

Pregnancy increases the risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes. COVID vaccination is recommended at any trimester. Speak with your pharmacist or physician about timing and current available formulations.

Immunocompromised Individuals

People with significantly weakened immune systems may receive an additional dose and may be eligible for a more frequent booster schedule. NACI recommendations are updated as new variants and data emerge.

Healthcare Workers & Caregivers

Healthcare workers and those who care for high-risk individuals benefit from staying up to date on COVID vaccination to reduce transmission to vulnerable patients.

All Eligible Adults

Is the COVID vaccine free in Ontario?
COVID-19 vaccines are currently free for eligible individuals under the Ontario COVID-19 vaccination program. Eligibility and funded formulations are updated periodically by the province. Speak with our pharmacist to confirm current eligibility criteria and whether a specific formulation is funded for your situation. There is no OHIP card requirement to receive a COVID vaccine in Ontario.
Which COVID vaccine is available at Peel Best Pharmacy?

How often do I need a COVID booster?
NACI guidance on COVID booster timing evolves as new variants emerge and as data on vaccine-induced immunity accumulates. As of current guidance, most healthy adults do not require a booster more than once per year. Adults 65+, immunocompromised individuals, and those with significant comorbidities may be recommended more frequent boosters — typically every 6 months. Your pharmacist can review your vaccination history and provide personalised guidance.
Can I get a COVID vaccine and a flu shot on the same day?
Yes. NACI guidance supports co-administration of COVID-19 vaccines with other vaccines, including influenza. There is no required interval between them. Getting both on the same visit is convenient and does not reduce the effectiveness of either vaccine. Ask our pharmacist about combining your flu shot and COVID booster in one appointment.
Do I need a COVID vaccine if I have already had COVID-19?
Prior infection with COVID-19 provides some degree of natural immunity, but this wanes over time and may provide less protection against newer variants. NACI and most public health authorities recommend staying up to date with COVID vaccination regardless of prior infection history. There is typically no required wait period after recovery before receiving an updated vaccine, though your pharmacist can advise based on your specific circumstances.
Are there any side effects from updated COVID vaccines?
Side effects from updated mRNA COVID vaccines are generally mild and similar to those from earlier formulations: injection-site soreness, fatigue, headache, mild fever, and muscle aches lasting 1–2 days. These are signs of an immune response and not the infection itself. Serious adverse events (such as myocarditis) are rare and more commonly associated with the second primary-series dose in younger males. The benefits of COVID vaccination continue to outweigh the risks across all adult age groups.
