Can a Pharmacist Prescribe Without a Doctor in Ontario?

Ontario pharmacists can prescribe for 19 minor ailments including UTIs (women 16–65), pink eye, cold sores, oral contraceptives, emergency contraception, shingles, tick bites, skin rashes, hay fever, insect bites, sprains, menstrual cramps, nausea, heartburn, hemorrhoids, canker sores, diaper rash, plantar warts, and fungal nail infections.

There is no separate fee for the pharmacist consultation. You pay only for the medication prescribed, which is covered by most private insurance and the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) plan where eligible.

The pharmacist consultation itself is covered — there is no billing for the visit. Medications prescribed are covered under your drug plan (ODB, Trillium, or private insurance) on the same basis as any other prescription.

Most minor ailments can be treated for all ages, though some conditions have age or gender restrictions. For example, UTI prescribing is specifically for women aged 16–65. Our pharmacist will assess eligibility at your visit.
