Meningococcal Disease & Why Vaccination Matters

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It can cause meningococcal meningitis (infection of the membranes around the brain) and septicemia (blood poisoning), which can kill within 24 hours. Even with treatment, it can leave survivors with permanent disabilities including hearing loss, limb amputations, and neurological damage.

The meningococcal ACWY vaccine protects against the four most common and dangerous serogroups. It is a mandatory entry requirement for travel to Saudi Arabia, and strongly recommended for travel to sub-Saharan Africa's meningitis belt. Peel Travel Clinic administers the vaccine and provides the required certificate documentation.

Who Needs the Meningococcal Vaccine?

The meningococcal ACWY vaccine is required or strongly recommended for these travellers:

Travellers to Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia requires proof of meningococcal ACWY vaccination for entry. Certificate must be issued within 3–5 years of travel. This is a mandatory visa requirement.

Travel to Sub-Saharan Africa (Meningitis Belt)

The "meningitis belt" stretches across sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia. High seasonal risk, particularly during dry season (December–June). Vaccination strongly recommended.

Students Travelling or Studying Abroad

Students living in dormitories or communal settings in countries with outbreaks face elevated risk. Many universities require proof of vaccination for international students.

Long-Term Travellers to Endemic Regions

Extended stays in high-risk areas, especially during meningitis season. Anyone staying in crowded conditions (refugee camps, disaster relief) in endemic regions.

Vaccine Schedule & Duration of Protection

Vaccine: Menveo or Menactra (ACWY conjugate)

A single intramuscular dose covers serogroups A, C, W, and Y — the main strains responsible for travel-associated and epidemic meningococcal disease. Both brands are accepted for Saudi Arabia entry requirements.

Timing: At least 10 days before travel

Saudi Arabia requires the vaccine be administered at least 10 days before arrival. For other travel, vaccination at any point before travel provides benefit.

Duration: 5 years

Protection lasts approximately 5 years. Boosters are recommended every 5 years for ongoing travellers to high-risk regions. Saudi Arabia requires the vaccine to have been administered within the last 3–5 years.

Certificate: Issued on-site

We issue vaccination documentation meeting Saudi Arabian and international requirements. Bring this documentation when applying for your travel visa, and carry it with your travel documents.

Frequently Asked Questions — Meningococcal Vaccine in Mississauga

Is meningococcal vaccine required for travel to Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Saudi Arabia mandates meningococcal ACWY vaccination for entry. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia, and the certificate must have been issued within the past 3–5 years (guidelines may vary — check current Saudi Ministry of Health requirements). This is a strict visa entry requirement and cannot be waived.
Which meningococcal vaccine is given in Mississauga?
We administer the meningococcal conjugate ACWY vaccine — available as Menveo or Menactra (quadrivalent, covering serogroups A, C, W, and Y). These are the recommended vaccines for travel to endemic regions and for Saudi Arabia entry. The meningococcal B vaccine (Bexsero) is a separate vaccine and may be recommended for certain travellers — ask our team.
Is the meningococcal vaccine covered by OHIP for travel?
The meningococcal vaccine is publicly funded in Ontario for Grade 7 students (MenC-ACYW conjugate). For adults requiring the vaccine for travel (e.g., Saudi Arabia, Africa travel), it is not covered by OHIP. Many private insurance plans and employer benefits cover it. Our staff can check your coverage before your appointment.
What is the meningitis belt?
The "meningitis belt" refers to a region of sub-Saharan Africa extending from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, including countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, and others. This region experiences seasonal outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis, particularly during the dry season (December through June). Travellers to this region are at elevated risk.
How long does the meningococcal vaccine protect against meningitis?
A single dose of the meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine provides protection for approximately 5 years in adults. Boosters are recommended every 5 years for ongoing travellers to high-risk regions, or before travel to Saudi Arabia if more than 5 years have passed since the last dose.
What are the side effects of the meningococcal vaccine?
Common side effects include injection-site pain, redness and swelling, mild headache, and fatigue lasting 1–2 days. Fever occurs in a small proportion of recipients. Serious side effects are very rare. The vaccine does not contain live bacteria and cannot cause meningococcal disease.
