About this Service

Clinically reviewed by licensed pharmacists

Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are painful, shallow mouth ulcers that make eating, drinking, and talking uncomfortable. They are not contagious — unlike cold sores — but can be very disruptive, especially when recurring frequently. Under Ontario's Minor Ailments program, our pharmacists can prescribe topical corticosteroids, analgesic gels, and antiseptic rinses that significantly speed healing and reduce pain.

Treatment is most effective when started at the first sign of a canker sore — often a tingling or burning sensation before the ulcer appears. Our pharmacist will assess the sore, rule out other oral conditions, and prescribe the most appropriate treatment on the spot.

For unusually large canker sores (over 1 cm), sores lasting more than 3 weeks, multiple simultaneous sores, or patients with very frequent recurrences, a family doctor evaluation is recommended to investigate possible underlying systemic causes such as inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, or nutritional deficiencies. Our onsite family doctors at TDL MD Clinic (Dr. Tony D. Luong, 905-712-3998) and Saldanha Health Centre (Dr. Saldanha, 905-890-8183) are available by appointment in the same building as Peel Best Pharmacy at 550 Matheson Blvd W, Unit 106, Mississauga.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a pharmacist prescribe for canker sores in Ontario?

Yes. Ontario pharmacists can prescribe topical corticosteroids and analgesic products for canker sores under the Minor Ailments program. Call (905) 712-0003 to book an appointment with our pharmacist. For frequent or unusually large canker sores, we recommend booking with our onsite physicians — TDL MD Clinic (905) 712-3998 or Saldanha Health Centre (905) 890-8183.

When do I need to see a doctor for canker sores?

See a family doctor if your sores are very large (over 1 cm), last more than 3 weeks, appear in clusters, or recur very frequently. This can signal an underlying condition. Our onsite family doctors at TDL MD Clinic (905) 712-3998 and Saldanha Health Centre (905) 890-8183 are available by appointment in the same building.

Are canker sores contagious?

No. Canker sores (aphthous ulcers) are not contagious — they are caused by immune responses, stress, minor injury, or nutritional deficiencies. Cold sores (caused by HSV-1) are contagious. Our pharmacist can help you tell the difference.
