Flu Vaccine (Influenza)

Influenza is a contagious respiratory virus that circulates seasonally and affects millions of people annually. While most people recover from the flu within a week or two, serious complications including pneumonia, hospitalization, and death can occur, particularly in older adults, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions. Annual flu vaccination is the most effective way to reduce your risk of infection and serious complications. The flu vaccine is especially important for travellers, healthcare workers, and anyone in close contact with vulnerable populations. The annual flu vaccine protects against the three to four influenza strains predicted to be most common that season. Most adults receive the standard-dose vaccine; however, seniors (65 years and older) may be eligible for Fluzone High-Dose or recombinant flu vaccine, which provide enhanced protection. The vaccine is given as a single injection and is safe and well-tolerated, with minimal side effects (mild arm soreness and occasionally low-grade fever). For eligible Ontario residents, the flu vaccine is covered by OHIP and is free. Private insurance may cover the vaccine for ineligible groups. Pharmacists can administer the flu vaccine without a physician's order.
