About this Service
Clinically reviewed by licensed pharmacistsHeartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) cause a burning sensation in the chest, a sour taste in the mouth, and regurgitation that can significantly disrupt sleep, meals, and daily comfort. Under Ontario's Minor Ailments program, our pharmacists can assess your symptoms and prescribe proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers, and other effective anti-reflux medications — without requiring a doctor's appointment.
Our pharmacists will review your symptoms, rule out alarm features, assess potential medication interactions (some PPIs interact with other common drugs), and counsel you on dietary and lifestyle changes — including trigger foods, meal timing, and sleeping position — that can significantly reduce reflux frequency.
If you experience any alarm symptoms — difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss, persistent vomiting, or blood in stool or vomit — a family doctor must be seen promptly, as these can indicate a more serious condition. Our onsite family doctors at TDL MD Clinic (Dr. Tony D. Luong, 905-712-3998) and Saldanha Health Centre (Dr. Saldanha, 905-890-8183) can assess urgently and arrange gastroenterology or endoscopy referrals if needed. Both are co-located with Peel Best Pharmacy at 550 Matheson Blvd W, Unit 106, Mississauga.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pharmacist prescribe for heartburn and GERD in Ontario?
Yes. Ontario pharmacists can prescribe PPIs and H2 blockers for heartburn and GERD under the Minor Ailments program. Call (905) 712-0003 to book an appointment with our pharmacist. For persistent or worsening symptoms, we recommend booking a physician appointment — TDL MD Clinic (905) 712-3998 or Saldanha Health Centre (905) 890-8183.
When do I need a doctor for heartburn or acid reflux?
See a family doctor if you have difficulty swallowing, unintended weight loss, blood in your stool or vomit, or if symptoms are not improving with medication. Our onsite family doctors at TDL MD Clinic (905) 712-3998 and Saldanha Health Centre (905) 890-8183 are available by appointment in the same building.
What foods trigger heartburn?
Common triggers include spicy foods, fatty or fried meals, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, citrus, and large meals eaten close to bedtime. Our pharmacist will provide personalized dietary counseling alongside your prescription.
How long should I take a PPI for heartburn?
Most short-course PPI treatment lasts 4–8 weeks. Long-term use should be monitored by a family doctor. Our pharmacist will advise on the appropriate course length and when to follow up with a physician.
