About this Service
Clinically reviewed by licensed pharmacistsInsect bites and stings cause a wide range of reactions — from local redness, itching, and swelling to large local reactions and potentially serious systemic allergic responses. At Peel Best Pharmacy, our pharmacists can assess bite and sting reactions and prescribe topical and oral treatments, including corticosteroids and antihistamines, under Ontario's Minor Ailments program.
For patients who have experienced a previous severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), have a known bee or wasp venom allergy, or are showing signs of a systemic reaction (spreading hives, throat tightening, face swelling, dizziness, or difficulty breathing after a sting), urgent physician assessment is needed. If symptoms are life-threatening, call 911 immediately.
After an allergic reaction, our onsite family doctors can prescribe an EpiPen auto-injector for future emergencies and provide a referral for formal allergy testing. TDL MD Clinic (Dr. Tony D. Luong, 905-712-3998) and Saldanha Health Centre (Dr. Saldanha, 905-890-8183) are both co-located with Peel Best Pharmacy at 550 Matheson Blvd W, Unit 106, Mississauga.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a pharmacist treat a swollen, itchy insect bite without a doctor?

When is an insect sting an emergency?
Call 911 immediately if you experience face or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or widespread hives after a sting. These are signs of anaphylaxis — a life-threatening emergency.

How is a tick bite different from other insect bites?
Tick bites require specific Lyme disease risk assessment within 72 hours — our pharmacist can prescribe doxycycline prophylaxis if appropriate. See our dedicated tick bite page for full details.
