About this Service

Clinically reviewed by licensed pharmacists

Insomnia affects roughly 1 in 3 Canadians at some point in their lives. Short-term insomnia -- lasting less than 3 months -- is often triggered by stress, a major life change, jet lag, shift work schedule changes, or illness recovery. It is one of the most common reasons people seek healthcare, yet many Ontarians wait weeks for a doctor appointment when same-day help is available at their pharmacy.

Under Ontario's Minor Ailments program, pharmacists at Peel Best Pharmacy are authorized to assess and manage short-term insomnia without a doctor's referral. Your assessment is covered by OHIP -- there is no out-of-pocket cost for the pharmacist visit.

During your assessment, our pharmacist will review your sleep patterns, discuss contributing factors, and provide individualized sleep hygiene counselling. Where appropriate within our prescribing scope, we can also initiate short-term pharmacotherapy -- so you leave with a plan, not just a suggestion to try harder.

Good sleep hygiene is the foundation of insomnia treatment. Key evidence-based practices include: maintaining a consistent sleep and wake time daily (even weekends), limiting screen exposure 60 minutes before bed, avoiding caffeine after 2pm, keeping your bedroom cool (16-19C), dark, and quiet, and avoiding alcohol as a sleep aid -- it disrupts sleep architecture even if it helps you fall asleep initially.

Chronic insomnia lasting more than 3 months, insomnia linked to obstructive sleep apnea, or insomnia associated with depression or anxiety requires physician assessment. Our co-located TDL MD Clinic (905) 712-3998 offers physician appointments at the same location -- so you can be referred seamlessly if a deeper investigation is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a pharmacist help with insomnia in Ontario?

Yes. Under Ontario's Minor Ailments program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and manage short-term insomnia -- providing sleep hygiene counselling and short-term pharmacotherapy where appropriate. The assessment is covered by OHIP at no cost. Call (905) 712-0003 or walk in to Peel Best Pharmacy at 550 Matheson Blvd W, Unit 106, Mississauga.

What insomnia treatments can a pharmacist recommend?

Our pharmacists can provide comprehensive sleep hygiene counselling (sleep schedule, screen time, caffeine, bedroom environment), recommend appropriate OTC sleep aids, and initiate short-term pharmacotherapy within Ontario's pharmacist prescribing scope. We will also help identify contributing factors like stress, shift work patterns, or medication side effects.

What is sleep hygiene and does it actually work?

Sleep hygiene refers to evidence-based daily habits that promote consistent, restorative sleep. Key practices: consistent sleep/wake times every day, no screens 60 minutes before bed, no caffeine after 2pm, cool and dark bedroom environment, avoid alcohol as a sleep aid, and get out of bed if unable to sleep after 20 minutes. For short-term insomnia, structured sleep hygiene counselling resolves the problem for many people without medication.

When should I see a doctor for insomnia instead of a pharmacist?

See a physician if your insomnia has lasted more than 3 months (chronic insomnia), if you or your partner have noticed heavy snoring or breathing pauses during sleep (possible obstructive sleep apnea), or if insomnia is accompanied by significant depression, anxiety, or other mental health symptoms. Our co-located TDL MD Clinic (905) 712-3998 offers physician appointments at the same location.

Is the insomnia assessment at the pharmacy covered by OHIP?

Yes -- the pharmacist minor ailment assessment for insomnia is fully covered by OHIP. There is no cost for the visit. You do not need a doctor referral. Walk in or call (905) 712-0003. Open Monday to Friday 10AM to 4PM and Sunday 10AM to 2PM at 550 Matheson Blvd W, Unit 106, Mississauga.

How quickly can a pharmacist see me for insomnia?

Walk-in availability is typically same-day -- no appointment needed. Our pharmacists can assess your insomnia, provide counselling, and discuss treatment options in a single visit (usually 15-20 minutes). Call ahead at (905) 712-0003 to confirm current wait times.
