Under Ontario's Minor Ailments program, our pharmacists can now prescribe topical salicylic acid preparations for plantar warts and topical antifungal medications for fungal nail infections — conditions that previously always required a doctor's appointment.
For plantar warts, our pharmacist will assess the size, location, and number of warts and prescribe the most appropriate concentration and formulation of salicylic acid, along with instructions for safe and effective home treatment. For fungal nail infections, we assess the affected nails and prescribe the appropriate topical antifungal.
For widespread plantar warts, resistant or recurrent fungal infections, immunocompromised patients, or cases where oral antifungal therapy is being considered (which requires liver function monitoring), a family doctor prescription is needed.
