Africa Travel Health — What You Need to Know

Africa is a continent of 54 countries with widely varying health risks. A safari in Kenya, a family visit to Lagos, a volunteer mission in Ethiopia, or a beach holiday in Tanzania each carry different vaccine requirements and disease risks. A personalized pre-travel consultation is essential — there is no one-size-fits-all Africa travel health plan.

Peel Travel Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, which means we can administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the official International Certificate of Vaccination required for entry to many African countries. We also stock typhoid, meningococcal, and hepatitis vaccines, and can prescribe malaria prophylaxis and standby antibiotics during your consultation.

Vaccines for Africa Travel

Recommendations vary by destination. Your travel health practitioner will tailor these to your specific itinerary.

Yellow Fever Required / Essential

Required for entry to many West and Central African countries. Our clinic is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre — official ICVP certificate issued on-site.

Typhoid Strongly Recommended

High risk across all of sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa. Essential for any travel beyond major hotels.

Hepatitis A Strongly Recommended

Contaminated food and water risk across the continent. 2-dose series provides lifelong protection.

Meningococcal ACWY Strongly Recommended

Essential for travel to the "meningitis belt" (Senegal to Ethiopia) and required for entry to Saudi Arabia.

Hepatitis B Recommended

High prevalence across Africa. Recommended for any stay with potential healthcare exposure, longer stays, or occupational risk.

Rabies (PrEP) Recommended

For wildlife safaris, rural stays, adventure travel, or any area where animal contact is possible and post-exposure care may be delayed.

Consider for humanitarian workers, disaster relief, or travel to active cholera outbreak areas. Also provides some protection against traveller's diarrhea.

Routine Vaccines Ensure Up to Date

Confirm MMR, Tdap, flu, COVID, and varicella are current. Polio booster may be recommended for some African destinations.

Malaria Risk by African Region

Africa accounts for approximately 95% of global malaria cases. Risk varies significantly by region and altitude.

Region Countries Risk Prophylaxis
East Africa Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia High Malarone or Doxycycline
West Africa Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast High Malarone or Doxycycline
Central Africa Congo, DRC, Cameroon, Gabon Very High Malarone recommended
Southern Africa Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi Moderate–High Malarone or Doxycycline
South Africa Kruger National Park and Limpopo area Low–Moderate Malarone for safari/park visits
North Africa Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya Very Low Typically not required

Frequently Asked Questions — Travel Vaccines for Africa

What vaccines do I need to travel to Kenya?
For Kenya, PHAC strongly recommends: yellow fever (required if arriving from a YF-endemic country; recommended given Kenya's border regions), typhoid, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B for longer stays. Malaria prophylaxis is essential for most of Kenya including safari parks (Masai Mara, Tsavo, Amboseli) and coastal areas (Mombasa). Meningococcal ACWY is recommended for extended stays or travel near the meningitis belt regions. Rabies PrEP is advisable for safari travellers and anyone spending time outdoors.
Do I need a yellow fever vaccine to enter Nigeria or Ghana?
Yes. Both Nigeria and Ghana require proof of yellow fever vaccination for all travellers upon entry. Without a valid ICVP certificate, you may be denied boarding or vaccinated at the airport under potentially questionable conditions. Peel Travel Clinic is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and can issue the official certificate. The vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival.
Is malaria a risk throughout Africa?
Malaria risk varies significantly across Africa. Central and West Africa have the highest risk — including the most dangerous P. falciparum malaria. East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) has high risk in most areas below 2,500m altitude, including all major safari parks. North Africa (Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia) has virtually no malaria risk. Southern Africa varies — South Africa has risk mainly in the northeastern Limpopo/Mpumalanga regions (Kruger). Our team will assess your specific itinerary.
What is the meningitis belt in Africa?
The meningitis belt is a region of sub-Saharan Africa stretching from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, including Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Nigeria's northern states, and others. It experiences seasonal meningococcal meningitis outbreaks, particularly during the dry season (December–June). Travellers to this region — including relief workers, missionaries, and those visiting rural communities — are at significant risk and should receive the meningococcal ACWY vaccine.
Do I need vaccines for an African safari?
Yes — safari travel is considered high-risk travel health-wise. For most East African safari destinations (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda), you need: yellow fever vaccine (entry requirement or strongly recommended), typhoid, hepatitis A, malaria prophylaxis, and ideally rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis (given wildlife contact and distance from medical care). Hepatitis B is also advisable. Book your consultation at least 6–8 weeks before departure to allow time for the full vaccine series.
Are travel vaccines for Africa covered by insurance?
Travel vaccines for Africa are not covered by OHIP. However, many employer benefit plans and travel insurance policies cover some or all travel vaccinations. Our staff can help you check your coverage before administering vaccines. We accept most major insurance plans.
