Diabetes is one of the most pharmacist-managed chronic conditions in Canada — most patients see their pharmacist more frequently than any other health professional. Our pharmacists at Peel Best Pharmacy are trained in diabetes medication management, ODB coverage navigation, injection technique training, and the full range of Ontario-funded diabetes services.

We carry a comprehensive inventory of diabetes medications — all major insulin brands, GLP-1 injections (Ozempic, Mounjaro, Victoza, Rybelsus), SGLT-2 inhibitors (Jardiance, Farxiga), oral medications, and a full range of monitoring devices and supplies. ODB cold-chain storage is maintained for temperature-sensitive insulins.

Diabetes Medications We Carry

All major diabetes drug classes available. ODB coverage information available for each.

Insulin

Lantus, Basaglar, Toujeo, Tresiba, Novorapid, Humalog, Fiasp

Blood sugar control via insulin replacement. Multiple formulations for basal, bolus, and mixed regimens.

Most insulins covered under ODB for eligible patients. Cold chain storage maintained in-store.

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

Ozempic (semaglutide), Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Victoza (liraglutide), Rybelsus

Lower blood sugar and promote weight loss. Once-weekly or daily injections, or oral tablet (Rybelsus).

Ozempic covered by ODB for T2D in some cases. Mounjaro/Wegovy coverage evolving. Private insurance varies.

SGLT-2 Inhibitors

Jardiance (empagliflozin), Farxiga (dapagliflozin), Invokana (canagliflozin)

Reduce blood sugar by increasing glucose excretion in urine. Also provide heart and kidney protection.

Jardiance covered under ODB for patients with established cardiovascular disease or CKD. Check eligibility.

DPP-4 Inhibitors

Januvia (sitagliptin), Tradjenta (linagliptin), Onglyza (saxagliptin)

Well-tolerated oral agents that lower blood sugar with low hypoglycemia risk. Often used in combination.

Some covered under ODB with prior authorization. Check individual formulary listings.

Biguanides

Metformin, Glucophage

First-line oral therapy for type 2 diabetes. Reduces liver glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity.

Metformin is covered by ODB. Generic formulations are low-cost even without coverage.

Sulfonylureas & Others

Glyburide, Gliclazide (Diamicron), Glimepiride, Acarbose, Pioglitazone

Various mechanisms to lower blood sugar. Older agents; often combined with metformin.

Most covered by ODB. Generic options widely available.

Diabetes MedsCheck — Free Annual Medication Review

Who is eligible?

Ontario residents with type 2 diabetes who take at least one antidiabetic medication (oral or injectable). No age restriction. Available once per calendar year.

What does it cover?

Our pharmacist reviews all your diabetes and non-diabetes medications for interactions, duplications, and adherence issues. We discuss blood sugar targets, monitoring schedules, hypoglycemia prevention, and provide a written medication summary you can share with your physician.

What does it cost?

The Diabetes MedsCheck is funded by the Ontario government through the MedsCheck program — there is no cost to eligible patients. Bring your Ontario health card (OHIP) and a list of all your medications.

How long does it take?

Frequently Asked Questions — Diabetes Pharmacy in Mississauga

Does OHIP cover insulin in Ontario?
Insulin is not directly covered by OHIP (which covers physician visits and hospital care), but it is covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program for eligible patients. ODB covers most insulin formulations for Ontario residents who are 65+, on Ontario Works, on the Ontario Disability Support Program, or enrolled in the Trillium Drug Program. Most insulins are on the ODB formulary. Private insurance plans typically cover insulin with varying co-pays. Our pharmacist can help you understand your coverage and identify lower-cost alternatives if needed.
Can a pharmacist help manage my diabetes?
Yes. In Ontario, pharmacists play an active role in diabetes management. Our pharmacists can: review all your diabetes medications for interactions and adherence issues; conduct an annual MedsCheck or Diabetes MedsCheck (funded by Ontario for eligible patients); adjust insulin doses under a collaborative care agreement with your physician; recommend blood glucose monitoring schedules; provide education on injection technique, storage, and hypoglycemia management; and refer you back to your physician when clinical changes are needed.
What is the ODB coverage for Ozempic or GLP-1 medications?
Ozempic (semaglutide) is listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary as a Limited Use (LU) benefit for patients with type 2 diabetes who meet specific criteria — generally inadequate blood sugar control on metformin and/or sulfonylurea. It is not covered by ODB for weight loss alone. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) coverage is evolving. Rybelsus (oral semaglutide) has limited ODB coverage. Private insurance plans vary widely. What is a Diabetes MedsCheck?
The Diabetes MedsCheck is a funded pharmacist service available to Ontario residents with type 2 diabetes who take at least one antidiabetic medication. During the review (typically 20–30 minutes), our pharmacist reviews all your medications, discusses blood sugar targets, screens for side effects and adherence barriers, and provides a written medication summary. It is funded by Ontario and available once per year at no cost to eligible patients. Ask at the counter to schedule yours.
What test strips are covered by ODB?
In Ontario, blood glucose test strips are covered by ODB for patients treated with insulin (and in some cases for patients on sulfonylureas, to a maximum number of strips per month). The ODB covers a specified list of test strips — not all brands are on formulary. Our pharmacist can confirm which strips are covered under your plan and ensure your glucometer is compatible with a covered brand. Patients not eligible for ODB coverage can access lower-cost store-brand strips.
What is the difference between Ozempic and insulin for type 2 diabetes?
Ozempic (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist taken as a once-weekly injection. It lowers blood sugar by stimulating insulin secretion in response to meals, reducing glucagon, and slowing gastric emptying. It also promotes significant weight loss. Insulin is a hormone that directly replaces or supplements the body's own insulin to control blood sugar. Insulin is often needed when blood sugar is very high or the pancreas no longer produces adequate insulin. Many type 2 diabetes patients start with oral medications and GLP-1 agents before progressing to insulin. Your diabetes care team and pharmacist can help you understand where you are in that progression.
