Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get Ozempic in Mississauga without a doctor?
No. Ozempic (semaglutide) and all GLP-1 agonists require a valid prescription from a physician or nurse practitioner in Canada. Your pharmacist cannot prescribe Ozempic. However, if you already have a prescription, you can fill it or transfer it to Peel Best Pharmacy at any time — our pharmacist will contact your previous pharmacy to arrange the transfer. If you are interested in starting a GLP-1 medication for weight management, you will need to speak to your family physician or a weight management clinic.
Is Ozempic covered by OHIP or ODB for weight loss?
Ozempic (semaglutide) is ODB-listed for patients with Type 2 diabetes who meet specific criteria. It is NOT covered by ODB for weight management without a diabetes diagnosis. Wegovy (higher-dose semaglutide, specifically approved for obesity) is also not currently covered by ODB. Private insurance coverage varies widely by employer plan — some plans cover GLP-1 medications for weight management with prior authorisation, while others exclude them. Our pharmacist can review your specific plan and help you navigate the prior authorisation process if coverage may be available.
What is the difference between Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro?
Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide — the same active ingredient — but at different doses and for different approved indications. Ozempic is approved for Type 2 diabetes (up to 2mg/week); Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management at a higher dose (up to 2.4mg/week). Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist — it activates two different hormonal pathways and in clinical trials has shown greater average weight loss compared to semaglutide. Is compounded semaglutide legal in Canada?
Compounded medications prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy are legal in Canada, but they are not Health Canada-approved products. Unlike branded Ozempic or Wegovy, compounded semaglutide has not undergone the full regulatory review process for safety, efficacy, and quality. Compounding is typically considered when a commercial product is unavailable or when a patient requires a formulation not commercially produced. Our compounding is fulfilled by our partner, Central Fill Compounding Services. A physician prescription is required. Discuss the risks and benefits with your physician before choosing compounded semaglutide over the branded product.
How do I transfer my Ozempic prescription to Peel Best Pharmacy?
Simply call (905) 712-0003 or walk in and provide your name, date of birth, and the name of your previous pharmacy. Our pharmacist will contact that pharmacy to initiate the transfer. You do not need to call your previous pharmacy first. Most transfers are completed same-day. If your prescription has no remaining refills, our pharmacist can contact your physician directly to request a renewal.
What happens if Ozempic is out of stock?
Ozempic supply constraints have been an ongoing challenge in Canada since 2022 due to global demand. If your dose is temporarily unavailable, our pharmacist can check availability at other locations in the network, review whether a different pen size or format is available, or discuss a temporary bridge plan with your prescriber — which may include oral semaglutide (Rybelsus), a different GLP-1, or compounded semaglutide. Do not stop your GLP-1 medication without discussing next steps with your pharmacist or physician, as rebound weight gain and blood sugar instability can occur.
