Blood Pressure Medications We Carry

We stock the full range of antihypertensive medication classes. Most are available same-day. ODB coverage noted where applicable.

ACE Inhibitors

Ramipril (Altace), Lisinopril, Perindopril

Relax blood vessels by blocking angiotensin-converting enzyme. First-line for many patients, especially those with diabetes or kidney disease.

Most ACE inhibitors are listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) formulary.

ARBs (Angiotensin Receptor Blockers)

Losartan, Valsartan, Candesartan, Irbesartan

Block angiotensin II receptors to lower blood pressure. Often used when ACE inhibitors cause a persistent dry cough.

Several ARBs are ODB-listed; coverage varies by specific agent.

Calcium Channel Blockers

Amlodipine, Felodipine, Nifedipine

Prevent calcium from entering heart and blood vessel cells, reducing contraction force and lowering BP. Well tolerated in most patients.

Thiazide Diuretics

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), Indapamide, Chlorthalidone

Increase kidney excretion of sodium and water, reducing blood volume and pressure. Often used in combination therapy.

Beta-Blockers

Metoprolol, Bisoprolol, Atenolol, Carvedilol

Reduce heart rate and force of contraction. Particularly useful in patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure, or atrial fibrillation.

Metoprolol, bisoprolol, and atenolol are ODB-listed.

Combination Agents

Amlodipine/Ramipril, HCTZ/Losartan, Bisoprolol/HCTZ

Fixed-dose combinations improve adherence by reducing the number of pills. Many patients with hypertension need 2 or more agents to reach target.

Can a pharmacist help manage my blood pressure in Ontario?
Yes. Ontario pharmacists play a significant role in hypertension management. They can perform in-store blood pressure checks, review your medications through a funded MedsCheck consultation, identify potential drug interactions or adherence issues, and in some cases adapt or renew prescriptions without a new physician visit. If your readings are outside target range, your pharmacist can also communicate with your doctor to flag the concern. Regular pharmacy visits — separate from your physician appointments — are an evidence-based strategy for improving blood pressure control.
Are blood pressure medications covered by OHIP or ODB in Ontario?
OHIP does not cover prescription medications, but many common antihypertensives — including ramipril, amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide, metoprolol, and bisoprolol — are listed on the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) formulary. If you are 65 or older, receive Ontario Works or ODSP, or are enrolled in other qualifying programs, ODB covers the cost of most listed medications (you pay a small co-pay if applicable). For patients under 65 without ODB, private insurance or the Trillium Drug Program may apply. Our pharmacist can review your specific coverage.
What blood pressure target should I be aiming for?
Hypertension Canada guidelines generally target a systolic blood pressure below 130 mmHg and diastolic below 80 mmHg for most adults at high cardiovascular risk, and below 140/90 mmHg for lower-risk adults. Targets may differ for elderly patients or those with certain conditions such as kidney disease or diabetes — your physician will establish your personal target. When you come in for a reading at our pharmacy, our pharmacist can review whether your most recent measurements are within your target range and discuss next steps if they are not.
Why does my blood pressure medication cause a dry cough?
A persistent dry cough is a well-known side effect of ACE inhibitors (such as ramipril or lisinopril) and occurs in roughly 10–15% of patients. It is caused by the accumulation of bradykinin in the airways. If the cough is bothersome, your physician may switch you to an ARB (such as losartan or valsartan), which lowers blood pressure through a similar mechanism but does not cause the cough. Speak to our pharmacist or your doctor before stopping your medication.
Can I get my blood pressure prescription refilled at Peel Best Pharmacy even if I filled it elsewhere before?
Yes. You can transfer your prescription to us at any time. Our pharmacist will contact your previous pharmacy to request the transfer — you do not need to visit your doctor for a new prescription. Is it dangerous to miss doses of my blood pressure medication?
Consistency is critical with antihypertensive therapy. Missing doses can cause blood pressure to rebound — sometimes above your pre-treatment baseline — which increases short-term cardiovascular risk. Patients who frequently miss doses are significantly more likely to experience heart attack, stroke, and kidney damage over time. If you are struggling with adherence, ask about blister packing or medication synchronization — our pharmacy offers both at no extra charge for most patients.
